Successfully achieving AEO (Authorized Economic Operator) status with G. Englmayer

Under EU customs law, companies have the option of applying for Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) status. AEO-certified companies enjoy a high level of trust among authorities and business partners as being particularly secure and reliable.

The Union Customs Code (UCC) has significantly upgraded AEO status: many customs simplifications and authorizations are now exclusively available to AEO holders or companies that at least partially meet AEO criteria. AEO-C (Customs) certification is particularly relevant here.

AEO-C  is a prerequisite for
  • Centralized customs clearance throughout Europe
  • Notification procedure without notification obligation
  • Reduced security deposit for deferred payment
  • Self-assessment - partial assumption of the customs office's tasks, such as self-calculation of duties and control of prohibitions and restrictions
AEO criteria open up further advantages:
  • Reduced reference amounts
  • Exemption from the provision of security
  • Customs representation in other member states
  • Authorization for customs simplifications
  • Total security

For special procedures or payment deferral accounts, the customs authority often requests parts of the AEO self-assessment form.

Secure supply chains with AEO-S (Security)

The certification stands for compliance with high security standards and creates secure supply chains. The EU checks this as part of the AEO-S authorization.

Internationally recognized standard

Many countries around the world have introduced similar AEO programs. Mutual recognition already exists with Switzerland, Norway, the USA, Japan, China, the UK and Moldova. This global network shortens delivery times and establishes AEO status as an international standard.

Further advantages of AEO authorization and self-assessment

  • Process analysis: Internal processes are closely scrutinized, weak points and potential for optimizing processes and controls become visible.

  • Clear structures: Internal guidelines are reviewed or newly developed. A customized customs manual ensures transparent and legally compliant processes.

  • Greater awareness: Employees and departments have a better understanding of customs processes and are sensitized to critical areas.

  •  Strong signal: Your business partners recognize through the AEO status that they are working with a reliable and professionally organized company.
